Sustainability

Bramall's commitment to sustainable development was underlined in February 2008, when we became the first social housing contractor in Britain to develop homes that meet the Government's new Code for Sustainable Homes at Level 4

  • The properties near Halifax set new standards for sustainability through environmentally friendly features, energy efficiency, affordability and even by encouraging healthy lifestyles.
  • These homes will save their owners almost 50 per cent on energy bills through improved efficiency measures. The properties emit less than half the carbon of a 'standard' home.
  • This is a significant development for the industry, in the face of increasing calls for sustainable housing developments and the pledge by the Government to invest £9 billion in building 3 million new homes across the country.
  • The scheme has created national interest and was recently praised by Housing Minister Caroline Flint as an 'exemplar' of sustainable development in the social housing sector.
  • This has lead to new projects to look at how other homes can reach the Government's standards. For example, we are looking at the potential of building Code 6 (carbon neutral) homes.

At South Kirkby in West Yorkshire, Bramall are also planning to build sustainable homes for Chevin Housing with a minimum Level 5 CSH, but aiming for zero carbon Code 6. If this is achieved we will be one of the first in the country to achieve a zero rating for habitable homes, which will be compulsory by 2016 for all new private homes and by 2013 for all new social housing.

We are also working with partners to refurbish existing homes with cost effective sustainability measures.

The aim is to make environmental considerations mainstream in the refurbishment of existing social housing projects throughout the country.

Bramall were also amongst the first to reach the ISO14001 environmental standard.

This is because we are committed to sustainable community development.
