Building affordable housing does not mean compromising on sustainability.
In partnership with South Yorkshire Housing Association (SYHA), we developed the £7.2 million White Willows Extra Care scheme - a 60 unit multi-occupancy development in Jordanthorpe, Sheffield.
SYHA is the largest supplier of care and supported housing in the region, providing high quality, effective and cost-efficient care and support services.
All the apartments at White Willows are two bedrooms, with 15 of the 60 provided for shared ownership. The scheme has communal facilities including a restaurant, shop, lounge, assisted bathrooms, hairdresser and treatment rooms. Residents have their own front door and can come and go as they please, and a warden call system operates throughout.
As an added benefit, the site is located immediately behind a medical facility and shopping centre.
Environmentally conscious measures incorporated into the design of White Willows include solar panels and a grass roof to absorb rain water, creating a thriving habitat for insects and birds and improving the insulation. Other stand-out features include a specially designed glass atrium which lets natural light and warmth into the building.
The sustainability of White Willows was recognised by industry experts when it became the first Extra Care development in England to achieve an 'excellent' rating from the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM).
