Residents enjoy award-winning 'Flour Power'
Scheme: Conversion into 43 apartments of the former Whittons Mill, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire
Client: Anchor Trust
Partners: English Heritage, Gainsborough Development Trust.
Description: Bramall converted the derelict former Flour Mill on the banks of the River Trent into 43 apartments for frail and older people. A devastating fire had destroyed the entire top floor and damaged much of the mill, soon after refurbishment work began. But despite this potential set-back, the conversion project - described as 'inspirational' and 'a luxury apartment building' - was completed on time and was opened by the Earl of Wessex in 2004. It was also winner of the Daily Mail Design Award for Best Retirement Development. Work included restoring the mill's original brickwork and steelwork. A new car park, landscaping and riverside walkway was created, all with full CCTV coverage.
Value: £3.12 million
Completed: April 2004
