Eco-friendly Extra Care

Scheme: 42 self-contained flats at Mytholm Meadows, Hebden Bridge, Halifax.

Client: Pennine Housing 2000

Description: Bramall built a complex of 42 self-contained flats to full disability standards, with an on-site Home Care team and communal facilities including a canteen, library, IT suite, hairdressing salon, laundry, meeting room and shop. The start of work was delayed when 200 Pipistrelle bats were discovered roosting in the old hall. After advice from an ecological expert, the bats nest was included in the design plans for the complex and after their hibernation period, work was able to start. Timber and stone at the old hall was salvaged and used at the neighbouring Mytholm Court.

The new complex now has a solar panelled roof generating its own electricity - the first such in the north of England. Energy saving light bulbs, double glazing and the most energy efficient kitchen appliances will reduce CO2 emissions by more than 3 tonnes every year. Throughout the project, links were developed through regular site visits by the nearby Hebden Royd Primary School and the local community.
