One of Britain's biggest housing specialists, Bramall Construction, part of the Keepmoat group, is celebrating after being named as one of the top 50 employers of women in the UK.
The organisation has been listed in this year's Top 50 places Where Women Want to Work league, published by The Times.
Bramall managed to fend off tough competition from thousands of other companies across both the public and private sectors to be recognised as one of the UK's most progressive large employers.
The league table confirms that Bramall provides the best working environment for women, while seeking to internally showcase their female talent in new and exciting ways.
Bramall was asked to submit detailed evidence about their firm and employee benefits in order to qualify. The evidence also focused on what the firm offers all its members of staff, regardless of their gender.
According to the list, Bramall has successfully proved itself in the following key areas; the opportunities that they provide women, having progressive, transparent cultures, an ability to celebrate diversity, an eagerness to embrace new technology to facilitate work-life balance and a commitment to being socially responsible.
The firm, which has its main offices in the North West and Yorkshire, is also well ahead of the industry average in terms of female recruitment and attracting women to roles which have previously been male-dominated.
Rukhsana Nabi, Partnership Development Manager for Bramall Construction, said: "We are thrilled to be named in The Times list of Top 50 Places Where Women Want to Work as we work very hard to develop initiatives that both attract and help to retain female members of staff.
"As a company we feel it is very important to showcase our female talent and this is evident in our high number of female apprentices and the percentage of women climbing the ladder.
"The construction industry has to move into the 21st century by shedding its old sexist image and selling itself to women. We are working extremely hard to show that we are a modern, supportive employer with a host of exciting career opportunities on offer."
Although the top 50 list is only in its second year, Bramall is quickly proving that when it comes to female recruitment, the construction industry is breaking new ground.
The organisation makes regular visits to colleges and schools to talk to future female job seekers while helping more women develop their careers.
Bramall's female statistics:
· Women comprise 18% of Bramall's workforce (average figure from the past three years) compared to the national industry average in construction of 10%
Dave Prescott, Managing Director of Bramall North West, said: "Our female employees have shown time and again that they can take on demanding roles in the construction industry and perform just as well as their male colleagues. We provide female colleagues with the support, training and encouragement they need to succeed. We've proved that the only barrier to more women in construction is one of perception and culture. It's certainly nothing to do with ability."
