Safer Homes for North Doncaster

The Home Office has allocated £5m to improve security in 45,000 homes across the UK. Doncaster is one of the 93 priority areas, and North Doncaster Development Trust has been selected to deliver the Safer Homes contract initially to 700 properties in the North of Doncaster. This will be a six month pilot project, which, if successful, will be rolled out across Doncaster.

Bramall Construction will provide help with delivering the project which includes fitting safety chains, window locks and spy holes. The home safety equipment will be provided free of charge to homes in the north of Doncaster and aims to reduce burglaries, reduce insurance premiums and make homes safer.

The scheme will also help provide jobs for the unemployed as four people will be employed by Phoenix, funded by the Future Jobs scheme from Job Centre Plus. They will be given one to one supervision from Bramall and will learn how to carry out fitting the safety equipment providing them with new skills.

Home Office Minister Alan Campbell said, 'Preventing burglary can be as simple as locking your doors and windows, yet 18% of people don't have proper door locks and 14% don't have window locks. These grants will help make the homes of thousands of people more secure and show them the simple steps they can take to protect themselves.'
