Bramall Construction boosts job opportunities in Derby

Ten local apprentices have been recruited by Bramall Construction to work on two multi-million pound landmark housing projects in Derby.

Committed to creating local jobs and strengthening communities, Bramall Construction has taken on the new recruits to teach them the skills of the trades and to provide long-term career opportunities.

The apprentices range from the age of 17 to 21 and are set to be trained in bricklaying and joinery. The local apprentices live across Derby with some travelling from areas such as Alvaston and Chaddesden.

Damian Moorecroft, aged 20, was taken on by Bramall in April after being made redundant from his previous job at the end of last year. Damian, from Chaddesden, is an apprentice bricklayerand is studying for an NVQ level 3 on day release at Mason's College, Derby.

Damian said: "Bricklaying is something I've been into from leaving school and when I was told I was being made redundant I asked at the building site if there were any vacancies. I was really lucky that Bramall were recruiting apprentices at the time.

"Being taken on by Bramall means that I can continue my studies at college and hopefully will complete my course at the end of the year, with skills that will last me a lifetime. The staff at Bramall have been really supportive and I feel like I've made huge progress since starting on site with them."

Complementing its ethos to bolster employment opportunities for local people, Bramall Construction is also set to take on two site operatives and one administrative/resident liaison support position in Derby. The trio of appointments have been funded through the former Government's Future Jobs Fund, which aimed to create 170,000 additional jobs nationally and is aimed at providing training and jobs for out of work people.

The new recruits will all work on two of Bramall Construction's Derby sites. The construction company is currently working in Elton Road in Osmaston and Cowsley Road in Chaddesden in partnership with, Derby Homes, Derby City Council and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) to deliver what are thought to be the first Council homes to be built in the city in 30 years.

Neil Baxter, Bramall Construction's Managing Director, said: "I am delighted to welcome our team of Derby apprentices and our trio of new recruits to the company. They are set to play an integral part in delivering these two landmark projects in the city.

"By recruiting local people to deliver these projects we are not only helping to regenerate the city, we are helping to change people's lives by providing opportunities for them to build careers."

Shaun Bennett, Director of Investment and Regeneration at Derby Homes said: "It's good to know that Derby people will be involved in the development of new social housing in the city that will be used by future generations of tenants."

Harvey Jennings, leader of Derby City Council said: "These two schemes show both the Council's and developers' commitment to apprenticeships. The apprentices have the opportunity to develop skills whilst working on flagship housing projects and these skills will stand them in good stead in what is a very competitive labour market".

The largest of the two new developments in Elton Road, Derby near where Rolls-Royce operated until 2008 will see £2.65 million invested in building an environmentally-friendly mix of homes - 12 apartments and 13 houses. This includes a £1.3 million investment from the HCA, through the Local Authority New Build Programme. The properties will be built to Levels Four and Five of the Code for Sustainable Homes, another first in the city.

The £700,000 scheme at Cowsley Road is a development of eight newly built homes built to Code Four and Five of the Code for Sustainable Homes which started in March 2010.
