Bramall call the tune when it comes to protecting the environment

When music fan May Boydell was told her garden gates were made out of plastic CD covers - she couldn't believe her ears.
But that's exactly what housing specialists Bramall proposed when they revamped her terraced home as part of a £1.4 million improvement programme.
The construction giant replaced May's flimsy wooden fence with environmentally-friendly plastic gates, fitted with cast-iron locks that will never splinter or rot.
Now, the grandmother-of-two is delighted that some of her rock heroes including The Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart and Engelbert Humperdinck may have been melted down to form her new gates.
But her taste isn't very contemporary and she's hoping "Gareth Gates" doesn't fit the mould.
Resident May, 67, who lives in Cambridge Street in Werneth, Oldham said: "When Bramall Construction told me my new garden gates had been made out of CD covers - I thought they must have gone mad!
"I've never heard anything like it before in my life."
"But I'm really impressed with my new gates because they're much stronger than before and I've got two bars across them making them more secure.
"I think it's very apt that my new gates are made out of CD covers because I really love music and going to concerts. I love Mick and Keith and I actually saw the Rolling Stones when they played one of their first gigs in the 60's - they were fantastic.
"It's hard to believe that Mick and Keith are now propping up my gates!"
Bramall is currently in the process of giving around 120 properties across Werneth in Oldham a similar face-lift.
The regeneration work forms part of a joint venture between Bramall, Oldham Council and the Oldham Rochdale Housing Market Renewal Pathfinder scheme. May has also received other works to her home including new garden walls and iron gates to the front of her house.
Sean Gregson, Site Manager for Bramall, said: "We've just started buying in gates that have been made out of recycled CD covers and it's an entirely new concept for us.
"The recycled material is very strong and falls in line with our company policy of coming up with cost-effective solutions that are environmentally friendly and promote sustainability at the same time."
Not only are the plastic gates environmentally friendly, but they have also been created by a manufacturing company that largely recruits disabled staff. Tom Milner, General Manager for the Wigan-based manufacturing company Metrolite Industries, said: "Our Company is unique as not only do we manufacture recycled gates and other recycled products, incidentally half of our employees who work on the products have a disability.
"Disabilities vary widely and the company's ethos is social inclusion we believe because of this, one of the company's key supporters is David Bellamy who likes the fact that we're both sustainable and train disabled people, who might otherwise be unemployed.
"Our recycling practice is still unusual and helps companies like Bramall reduce their carbon footprint because of the longevity of the product. When the tenants get fed up with their gates they can always put them back into recycling again.
"But it's wonderful to think that the greatest rock and roll stars of all time could have gone in to making a set of gates!"
